With 11 personnel on each shift, the Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department staffs two engine companies and one truck company between its two fire stations. Engine 1 and Truck 1 are housed at Station 1, which is located on W. Main St. in downtown Carrboro. Engine 2 operates out of Station 2, which is located on Homestead Rd. on the north end of town.
If you would like to take a look around either of these stations, feel free to stop by anytime and anyone in the department will be happy to show you and your family around. We especially love to show children the fire trucks and stations!
Carrboro Fire Station 1
Station 1, as it appears today, is neither its original appearance nor location. The Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department was founded in the late 1920's, and its first fire station was originally located on Lloyd St. The building that was the first fire station still exists today, although in modified form. Station 1 moved to the Main St. location in the 1960's. At first it was housed in a brick building that was originally part of Carrboro Elementary School. This portion of the building is still in use today. It houses the administrative offices, training space, and living quarters for the staff and firefighters assigned to station 1. By 1981, growth within the fire department necessitated the addition of a new apparatus bay giving the station its present look and size. The bay can accommodate up to six apparatus, three in the front and three in the rear. In the picture at right you can see three of our units parked in the station and at the ready: Engine 1, Truck 1, and Engine 10.
Carrboro Fire Station 2
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s the community of Carrboro continued to grow, especially on the north end of town. Additionally, annexation of neighborhoods in this area to the North of town meant that fire protection had to be extended to these new residents of Carrboro. To address this need the Town of Carrboro undertook the construction of a new fire station located on Homestead Rd. Opened in September of 2010 and dedicated to former Fire Chief Rodney Murray, the Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department put a tremendous amount of effort into building a station that reflected the values and beliefs of the community.
EMS at the Stations
In an effort to provide for better service to our residents, the Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department opened its doors to Orange County Emergency Medical Services ambulances in January 2014. This colocation provides training opportunities and faster responses from EMS to the residents of Carrboro. Orange County EMS Medic 2 is located at Station 1, Orange County EMS Medic 6 and Orange County EMS 11 is located at Station 2. This partnership has greatly increased the safety of our community!

The signs are made at the fire-rescue department and you will be contacted once it is ready for pick-up.
- Does your department check and install smoke alarms and/or carbon monoxide detectors?
As a part of our Community Risk Reduction program the Fire-Rescue Department installs smoke and carbon monoxide alarms for residents of Carrboro and the South Orange Fire District. Smoke alarms provide early notifications increasing the likelihood that you and your family will be able to escape if there is a fire in your home. Submit this form to schedule installation or inspection of a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm.
